Scuba Diving in North Sulawesi - the Natural Wonders of Bunaken and Lembeh Strait.

Full of natural wonders, and offering an almost unparalleled levels of marine biodiversity, North Sulawesi has become one of the worlds premier destinations for ecotourism and adventure travel in recent years. Today, large numbers of scuba divers travel to this distant part of Indonesia, to sample some of the finest dive sites to be found anywhere throughout South East Asia.

The diving in North Sulwesi is focused in two main areas, the Bunaken National Marine Park and the famous muck diving capital of Lembeh Strait. There are other destinations where good diving is on offer in North Sulwesi, including the dive sites in Sangihe Island and Pulau Bangka, however it is the dive sites in Bunaken and Lembeh which draw large numbers of scuba divers here year after year.

The Bunaken National Marine Park was established in 1991, and the deep waters of the park offer one of the greatest levels of marine biodiversity to be found anywhere in the world. A home to over 70% of all fish species found throughout the Indo-western pacific region, the waters of Bunaken are home to an incredible array of coral and marine life.

The scuba diving in Bunaken is predominantly characterised by the awesome vertical walls which almost surround the island. Along these walls, an array of cracks, caves and crevices are home to a wide range of fish life during the day as well as the night. Dive sites including Fukui Point and Black Rock provide divers with access to stunning corals as well as stunning array of smaller marine life.

Lembeh Strait is widely acknowledged as being the ‘muck diving’ capital of the world, and offers what can only be described as a truly unique experience in diving. The diving itself is shaped by the black sandy bottom of the ocean in the region, which is home to a wide selection of critters and smaller marine life. It is for this reason that underwater photographers often choose to make the longer journey out to Lembeh Strait, to sample some of the finest opportunities for underwater macro photography to be found anywhere in South East Asia. Octopus, flying gunnards, frogfish and dwarf lionfish can all be found throughout the numerous dive sites in the Lembeh Strait.

Diving is possible in North Sulwesi throughout the year, although the best conditions are to be found from late March through to November. From January through to March, heavy rains and strong winds can be found throughout the region, leaving the conditions unfavourable for scuba diving.

Without doubt, the diving in North Sulawesi is of the highest standard, and the region fully justifies its claim to be one of South East Asia’s leading scuba diving destinations. The superb dive sites of Bunaken and Lembeh undoubtedly ensure the longer journey time to reach here is worthwhile, and leave you only thinking of when you can return!

Day 1

On the morning of your arrival you’ll be picked up at the Durban International Airport by the Immerse Yourself crew and from there make our way to the Zululand Tree Lodge, which is situated in the Ubizane game reserve bordering the Hluhluwe game reserve. Upon arrival you will be showed to your stilted cabin after which you’ll have lunch and a look at the itinerary with introduction to our staff, with the early afternoon to spend at own leisure. You’ll enjoy two game drives on your visit, one that afternoon and the other early next morning. Dinner is served and we invite you to join us for an idyllic ‘meal in the bush’ experience.

Day 2

After your morning game drive followed by breakfast, we will head off to Sodwana Bay for a three day visit. We will do five dives over this period which will take place in the mornings, leaving afternoons open for some leisure time as well as a late afternoon activity. Upon our arrival you’ll be showed to your cabin, after which lunch will be served with the rest of the afternoon to spend at own leisure.

Day 3

Early morning, after a small breakfast, we will make our way to the beach for the first dives of your dive safari. We’ll do two dives today with brunch in between, and afterwards make our way back to the lodge with the early afternoon open to spend at own leisure. You’ll be picked up again late afternoon for a trip to Lake Sibaya where we will enjoy sundowners. Dinner will be served at the lodge once back from Sibaya.

Day 4

Early morning, after a small breakfast, we will make our way to the beach for the second day’s diving at Sodwana Bay. We’ll again do two dives today with brunch in between, and afterwards make our way back to the lodge with the early afternoon open to spend at own leisure. You’ll be picked up again later for a horse-back outing through the nature reserve which will end up on the beach, where you will be met by the rest of the Immerse crew with sundowners ready.

Day 5

After a small breakfast we will head down to the beach for our last dive at Sodwana, after which we will make our way to Zululand Tree lodge OR Hilltop camp in the Hluhluwe game reserve. You will have lunch and the early afternoon open to spend at your own leisure. You will have two game drives once again, late afternoon and early the next morning. Dinner will be served after you had time freshen-up after your game drive.

Day 6

There will be an early wake-up call to get ready for our second game drive, after which we will enjoy a full breakfast and make our way down to the Kwa-Zulu Natal’s south coast. Once at the Selborne hotel you will be booked in and have the rest of the afternoon to spend at own leisure, followed by dinner.

Day 7
Early morning, after a small breakfast, you’ll be picked up from the hotel and we’ll head down to the dive center and get ready for our first dives on the Aliwal Shoal. We will then enjoy a brunch before we do our next dive. After our second dive we’ll head back to the hotel where you’ll have the afternoon at own leisure, followed by dinner.

Day 8

Early morning, after a small breakfast, you’ll once again be picked up from the hotel and we’ll make our way to the dive center for our second day’s diving on the south coast; the only difference is that we will be diving with the Tiger Sharks today! Depending on the conditions, after the Tigers we will either do another dive on the Aliwal Shoal or take a trip to Croc-World where we will have lunch and a guided tour through the park. You’ll then be taken back to the hotel to spend some time at own leisure and enjoy dinner. Day 9Early morning, after a small breakfast, you’ll be picked up from the hotel and head off to do our second Tiger Shark dive. Depending on the conditions, we will do a second dive for the day which will be on one of the interesting dive spots not yet dived. Afterwards you will be taken back to the hotel to enjoy an afternoon at own leisure, followed by dinner and last evening drinks.

Day 10

Along with the arrival of day ten, comes the end of our East Coast Safari. You’ll enjoy a late morning with breakfast at own leisure, and the rest of the day to just relax and get yourself packed for your afternoon flight back to JHB and from there your connection flight back home.

Day 1

You will have the rest of the afternoon to relax before we get ready to head out for a late afternoon game drive and sundowners at a watering hole. Day 2
You'll have an early wake-up call to get ready for our second game drive, after which we will enjoy breakfast. You'll have some time to relax and get ready for your transfer to Sodwana Bay. On arrival at Sodwana Bay we'll have welcoming drinks, and showed to your cabin where you will have the opportunity to freshen up and have lunch at your own time, with the rest of the afternoon to relax and lounge around the pool. Dinner is served and we invite you to come and sit down, relax and enjoy a 5 star meal with some of the best wines SA has to offer.

Day 3 & 4
The next morning we'll be off to the beach for an introduction to Surf launching, and our first dives on some of the most tropical reefs in the world. We’ll make our way back to the lodge where you can enjoy lunch at your own time and have the early afternoon to spend at own leisure.

Later you will be picked up and we'll venture on a horseback tour through the beautiful Sodwana Bay Nature Reserve, this also leaves us with the perfect opportunity to enjoy sun-downers on the beach. We'll head back to the lodge and everybody then has the opportunity to prepare for Dinner. After dinner we will have a quick look at what is planned for the next day.

We'll once again do two dives, with the early afternoon open to spend at own leisure before we head off for a trip through the African bush to Lake Sibaya, where we'll enjoy a sun-downer next to this spectacular wetland.

Day 5
On the morning of the fifth day we will leave Sodwana Bay and head back to the Tree Lodge for another night in the African bush, where you will enjoy another two game drives.

Day 6 - 8
After our early morning game drive followed by breakfast, we'll jet off to the Kosi Bay border post about 2h30 hours away. Once through the border we will make our way to the resort in safari style, as the terrain doesn't allow us to get to the camp with the tour bus.

On arrival at the camp you'll be shown to your cabin so that you can start to settle in for our three day stay in Southern Mozambique. After everybody got settled in nicely and had some time to relax we will have lunch at one of the local restaurants.

The rest of the afternoon can either be spend relaxing at the lodge/camp or we can arrange to take some refreshments down to the beach if you maybe just want to catch a little African sun. Dinner is served and afterwards we will have a dive briefing and have a look at the itinerary for the rest of the two days.

Like at Sodwana Bay you'll have the opportunity to do two dives a day, with afternoons open for either just relaxing or taking a trip with us to one of the many interesting places in the area.

Day 9
On the morning of the ninth day we will leave Southern Mozambique and make our way back to the Tree Lodge for a last evening in the African bush, where you will enjoy another two game drives.

Day 10
There will be an early wake-up call to get ready for our last game drive, after which we will enjoy a full breakfast and make our way down to the Kwa-Zulu Natal's south coast. Once at the Hotel you will be booked in and have the rest of the afternoon to spend at own leisure, followed by dinner.

Day 11
Early morning, after a small breakfast, you'll be picked up from the hotel and we'll head down to the dive center and get ready for our first dives on the Aliwal Shoal. We will then enjoy a brunch before we do our next dive. After our second dive we'll head back to the hotel where you’ll have the afternoon at own leisure or we could take a trip to one of the many places of interest.

Living Up to the Reputation - Scuba Diving in the Phillippines

To give it its full name, The Republic Of The Philippines is made up of over 7,000 separate islands, and covers an area of just over 300,000 square kilometres (115,000 square miles). Its population of 77 million people makes it one of the larger South East Asian countries, but recent political unrest, and sporadic outburst of militant activity have resulted in the tourist figures for the Philippines being lower than for many of their South East Asian neighbours. The main island groups in the Philippines are Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao and the capital city is Manila, where over 10 million of the Philippino population live.

Due to the size of the Philippines, the weather patterns are relatively diverse, however they can be roughly divided into the dry season, which runs from September through until May, and the wet season, which runs from June to September. The average temperature across the Philippines is 78 degrees F (25 degrees C) ranging up to 90 degrees F (32 degrees C) in the drier months.

Diving in the Philippines is possible at any point in the year, although it may be wise to avoid the monsoon months which run from July to September. When considering whether or not to go diving in the Philippines, the figures are very compelling. 34,000 square kilometres of coral reefs, and over 400 species of fish means the Philippines undoubtedly holds a great deal of potential for novice and expert divers alike. The unique location of the waters of the Philippines, means that they are constantly enriched by the currents of the South China Sea, the Indian Ocean and the Celebes Sea.

The diving in the Philippines can be split into five main regions, Luzon, Palawan, Puerto Galera, the Sulu Sea and Visayas. The diving ranges from fresh water cave dives in the inland lakes, through to some of the best drift diving available along one of the Philippines numerous coral reef walls.

The best diving in the Philippines is considered to be at the Visayan Islands, which are towards the centre of the archipelago. Popular dive sites within the Visayan Islands include Bohol and Moalboal. The is also excellent diving to be in the multitude of dive spots around Puerto Galera, where the Canyons is rated is widely rated as a 'must do' dive. Drift diving through the three deep canyons, accompanied by a multitude of barracudas, tuna, jacks and trevally, make this a truly enthralling dive. Add to this the comman sightings of giant manta rays, hammerheads and white tips, and you'll see why many people dive the Canyons more than once.

Overall, the diving in the Philippines is of the highest standards, and the difficult travelling between the various sites is more than compensated for on the actual dive sites. It caters for all standards of scuba diver, from novice up to the most experienced pro's, and undoubtedly leaves all wishing they had booked their stay in the Philippines for longer.

Scuba Diving in Sharm El Sheikh - the Gateway to the Red Sea

Sharm El Sheikh is located at the very tip of the Sinai Peninsula, and given its ease of access to the Red Sea has grown over the past twenty years into one of the worlds best and most popular scuba diving locations. Large amounts of scuba divers travel here each year to sample the delights that the Red Sea has to offer.

It offers a good variety of diving, from shore dives, to reef dives all the way through to one of the most developed liveaboard industries to be found anywhere. Each year, thousands of divers flock to Sharm El Sheikh to sample what is truly fantastic diving is exceptional conditions.

The main reason for the success of Sharm El Sheikh, as a diving destination is the Red Sea, which is one of the worlds richest marine environments. With over 400 recorded species of coral and over several hundred species of fish, coupled with warm waters and exceptional visibility, the Red Sea has everything that a diver will be looking for. On top of this, Sharm El Sheikh, due to its position on the south of the Sinai Peninsula, has easy access to some of the worlds greatest dive sites, including sites such as Ras Mohammed Marine Park, and the famous Thistlegorm wreck. The diving in Sharm El Sheikh tends to be focussed on a few big dive locations, including the Straits of Tiran and Ras Mohammed Marine Park. Both areas, rich in plant and marine life, tend to have something to satisfy even the most experienced of divers.

The Straits of Tiran lie 7 kilometres north east of Sharm El Sheikh, and is actually a series of four major reefs which form the top of an underwater bridge, and which support large amounts of hard and soft corals. The Straights of Tiran also offers divers an excellent opportunity to spot some of the large pelagic marine life that inhabit the area. The four reefs, Jacksons Reef, Woodhouse Reef, Thomas Reef and Gordon Reef all offer excellent dive sites, and it is certainly worth taking the time out to explore the Straights of Tiran in detail over the course of a few days.

The Ras Mohammed National Park is located on the very tip of the Sinai Peninsula, and its nutrient rich waters from the Gulf of Aquaba consistently bring large levels of marine life into the area. Steep coral encrusted walls, sloping down to depths of over 1000 metres tend to dictate the nature of the diving in Ras Mohommed, however there are a number of beautiful shallow reefs which are also worth spending time at. There are a number of good dive sites in the Ras Mohammed area, including Shark Reef and Yolanda Reef, Eel Garden, Anenome City, Jackfish Alley and Shark Observatory, all of which are covered in greater detail in our dive sites directory.

Of all the dive sites accessed through Sharm El Sheikh, undoubtedly the most popular is the Thistlegorm Wreck, a World War II supply ship which sank in 1941. The wreck itself still contains two large Rolls Royce armoured cars, along with crates of Lee Enfield rifles. Within the holds of the Thistlegorm wreck, you can also see the Morris cars, Bedford Trucks, and the BSA military motorbikes, as well as other supplies such as wellington boots and ammunition.

It is possible still to dive through parts of the Thistlegorm wreck, giving divers access to the wheel house, the chart room, and the bathroom salon and the various holds that contained so much of what was sunk. The Thistlegorm is usually a two dive day, with the first dive following the outer curcuit of the wreck, observing areas such the Locomotive (which was blown clear of the wreck), and the propeller towards the rear. Nowadays, a large variety of marine life has made it's home at the Thistlegorm Wreck, and you are likely to see large shoals of Batfish alongside good numbers of Barracuda here. Even a couple of Crocodile fish seem to have made their home on the decks of the Thistlegorm!

Overall, Sharm El Sheikh presents scuba divers both novice and advanced with a multitude of interesting dives. For people looking to learn to dive, Sharm El Sheikh has a particularly strong offering, with numerous established, and professionally run operations. Each year, large numbers of people, especially Europeans, come to Sharm to learn to dive, and to enjoy the various other attractions that the area has to offer. In particular, it is worth while taking the time to visit the St Katherines monastry and climb Mount Sinai, both of which are a short drive away.

Scuba Diving in Krabi and the Koh Phi Phi Islands

The stunning scenery of the Krabi and Koh Phi Phi regions of Thailand have long ensured that the area is a firm favourite on Thailand's well trodden traveler and backpacker trails. Dramatic limestone cliffs, beautiful beaches and the low cost of living in the area have ensured that large numbers of tourists flock to the region every year.

Recent years however have seen the region develop a reputation amongst the scuba diving community, attracted by the stunning underwater topography which easily rivals the dramatic cliffs and pinnacles found above the water. Today, the popular resort areas of Ao Nang, Koh Phi Phi and Railee Beach are as likely to be filled with scuba divers as the traditional 'horizon-gazers' of the 70's and 80's.

The scuba diving in Krabi and Koh Phi Phi seems to be concentrated into four main regions. The local islands and reefs just south of Krabi, the various dive sites at Shark Point Marine Sanctuary, the sites surrounding the islands at Koh Phi Phi and the two world class dive sites at Hin Daeng and Hin Muang.

Just a few miles south of Krabi lie the small islands of Ko Ha, Ko See and Ko Yaw Bon. The dive sites here are an interesting mix of tunnels, swim through's, coral heads and large boulder formations. With the exception of the tunnel at Ko Yaw Bon, the dives here are accessible for novice divers and provide an excellent opportunity to see marine life including Black Tip Sharks, Banded Sea Snakes and Leopard Sharks.

The dive sites of Shark Point Marine Sanctuary are home to an incredible array of marine life, and although the diving here tends to be dominated by the dive sites at Anenome Reef and Shark Point, the King Cruiser Wreck provides an excellent dive and is now home to a good amount of coral and marine life. Large barracuda and tuna are regularly spotted here, attracted by the large amount of nutrients swept up from the nearby deep waters.

Continuing further south are the stunning islands at Koh Phi Phi, an area characterized by the dramatic limestone cliffs and pinnacles which rise dramatically above the sea, before plunging down into the dark depths below. Once a quiet Muslim fishing village, the region now has a developed diving industry, and today there are at least ten dive centers operating out of the Ton Sai area on Koh Phi Phi.

Underwater, the islands of Koh Phi Phi are a mixture of coral gardens, steep walls and swim throughs, and the islands have a number of excellent dive sites in close proximity. In particular, the dive sites at Ko Yung Pinnacle and Ko Bida nok consistently deliver excellent scuba diving and are widely acknowledged as being the best dive sites in Koh Phi Phi.

Last, but certainly not least are the two world class dive sites south of Phi Phi at Hin Muang (Purple Rock) and Hin Daeng (Red Rock). These sites, a mixture of steep walls and pinnacles are both in close proximity to deep water, and as such the larger marine life are attracted to the large amounts of nutrients that can be found here. The two sites at Hin Muang and Hin Daeng represent the best opportunities for people wishing to see either whale sharks or manta rays, and both are regularly sighted at these dive sites.

The scuba diving throughout the Krabi and Koh Phi Phi region is undoubtedly of the highest standards, and a number of the dive sites offer genuinely world class diving. For divers looking to go scuba diving on Koh Phi Phi or in Krabi, the majority of the dive centers in the region can be found in the resort of Ao Nang or on the beach area at Ton Sai in Koh Phi Phi.

Scuba Diving on the Great Barrier Reef

Larger than the whole of Great Britain, and comprising of over 2,900 individual reefs and 900 separate islands, the Great Barrier Reef is not only the worlds largest organism, it is one of the worlds best scuba diving destinations.

For the sheer diversity of marine life, the Great Barrier Reef is unrivalled. At the top of this remarkable reef system lies the most famous dive site on the Great Barrier Reef, the Cod Hole. Here a large family of resident Potato Cod will amaze you with their friendly antics as well as their sheer size. Due to their more remote location, the dive sites of the Far Northern Reefs are usually taken in on one of the many three day liveaboard trips that operate out of Cairns.

For more experienced divers, the dive sites of the Coral Seas prove a huge attraction. Located around 200 kilometres offshore, the Coral Sea is considered to be one of Australia's best dive sites. Throughout the year, large numbers of liveaboards travel here from Cairns to sample the superb diving that can be found at dives sites such as Osprey Reef and Bougainville Reef.

Overall, the Great Barrier Reef is fully deserving of its legendary status as one of the worlds best diving locations. The range and diversity of marine and coral life is barely rivalled anywhere else on earth. Thankfully, the considerable conservation efforts of the authorities will ensure that this natural wonder is experienced by many generations to come.

More Than Just Sharks - Scuba Diving in South Africa

Traditional perceptions of holidays in South Africa conjure up images of vast open plains, roaring lions and beautiful game lodges, names of regions such as the Kruger National Park immediately come into people's minds.

What is less well known is the incredible diversity of scuba diving that is on offer for visitors of all levels of experience. From the cooler waters around the Western Cape, up to the tropical waters around Sodwana Bay near the Mozambique border. South Africa undoubtedly offers some of the finest scuba diving throughout Africa, and in sites such as Protea Banks, Aliwal Shoals and Sodwana Bay, arguably some of the best in the world.

The nature of the scuba diving in South Africa tends to be dictated by its unique geographical location on the southernmost tip of Africa, the meeting point of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. The area around Cape Town and the Western Cape tends to offer diving in cooler waters, typically with lower visibility. Whereas further up the coast towards KwaZulu Natal, an increase in the water temperatures and visibility tends to offer diving more in keeping with more tropical locations.

Understandably, the large variation in the water temperatures, have resulted in a variety of different marine life inhabiting the coast line of South Africa, ranging from the notorious Great White Sharks found around the Gansbaai and Cape Town areas, through to the dolphins and manta rays of tropical Sodwana Bay.

The scuba diving in South Africa tends to focus predominantly around two main regions, the Western Cape and the Garden Route, and the almost legendary sites in Sodwana Bay, Aliwal Shoals and Protea Banks which are found further north within KwaZulu Natal. Whilst there is a great diversity of diving on offer throughout South Africa, it would be safe to say that the standard of diving here is of a consistently high standard, with each site having something to offer the majority of divers.

Located within the Greater St Lucia Wetlands Park, Sodwana Bay is arguably the pick of the fantastic dive sites in South Africa. Its warm, clear waters, and stunning reefs and rich variety of corals act merely as a veneer to what rich rewards lie within these beautiful waters. Huge Potato Bass, morays and manta rays are all regular inhabitants of sites such as Nine Mile Reef, Three Mile Reef and Antons.

Despite this rich variety of marine and coral life in the waters of Sodwana Bay, it is the opportunities for scuba diving with the large populations of sharks, and particularly the Ragged Tooth Sharks that people visit the region. Here in Sodwana Bay, as well as Protea Banks and Aliwal Shoals, are some of the finest shark diving locations in world. Alongside the Ragged Tooth sharks, large populations of Bull Sharks, Thresher Sharks and Hammerheads regularly inhabit the waters off the coast of KwaZulu Natal.

Diving in South Africa is available all year round, although the majority of visitors to the region tend to visit during the summer months of late November through to February. Water temperatures vary greatly with location, with the Atlantic Ocean cooling the waters off the Western Cape to around 10 - 14 degrees Celsius whereas the more tropical waters around Sodwana Bay tend to average around 20 - 21 degrees.

Throughout South Africa, large numbers of dive operators offer a variety of scuba diving courses across all the major accreditation agencies, and overall, the standard of dive operator tends to be relatively high. Good local knowledge, well maintained equipment and boats tend to be the norm in a region that is looking to attract an increasing number of scuba divers to its waters.
Overall, South Africa offers a wide range of unique diving experiences, and has something to offer scuba divers of all experiences. With South Africa becoming increasingly aware of its rich wildlife heritage, on land and in the water, it only bodes well for future visitors to this beautiful country.

The Red Sea resort of Hurghada is one of the regions most rapidly expanding tourist destinations, and an increasingly popular destination for scuba divers wishing to go scuba diving in the Red Sea. Superb coral and marine life, coupled with some of the most interesting wrecks in the Red Sea have made Hurghada into one of scuba divings key tourist destinations in recent years.

The scuba diving in Hurghada is of a high standard, with good dive sites throughout the region including the wrecks of the Giannis D and the Carnatic, both of which can be found in the shallower waters off the coast of Hurghada. Further south, the dive sites around Carless Reef and Abu Ramada (The Aquarium) are also of the highest standard, and although their more exposed nature makes them susceptible to the elements, the experience here can be truely fantastic.

The water temperatures in Hurghada are relatively warm, especially in the warmer summer months, when the average water temperature is around 26-27 degrees. This does tend to dip somewhat in the cooler winter period, when the water temperature will fall to around 20-22 degrees.

The vast majority of these are well equipped, and will offer access to the major dive sites in the waters surrounding Hurghada as well as the sites further afield including the Thistlegorm Wreck and the Dunraven.

Krabi, and the islands of Koh Phi Phi are located approximately 600 miles south of the capital at Bangkok, and although they have always proven popular as a destination for the backpacker and travellers, recent years have seen the region develop a growing reputation as one of Thailands premier scuba diving destinations.

More good news this morning, as another five dive centres went live on our new Dive Centre Database program, providing an even greater choice for our users thinking about their next scuba diving holiday.

ML Divers are based on the beautiful island of Cyprus, the home to the fantastic Zenobia Wreck dive sites. Based in the Senator Hotel in Ayia Napa, ML Divers offer a wide range of dive sites in Cyprus including Kermia Beach, Da Costa Bay, Cyclops, Green Bay and of course the Zenobia Wreck.

The Maldives offer some of the worlds finest scuba diving, and divers from all over the world are drawn here every year by the superb levels of marine life, and exceptional coral that exists under the water in around the hundreds of atolls in the Maldives.

The majority of the dive sites in the Maldives tend to be located in the shallow coral reefs which surround the low lying atolls, however the channels (or Thila's) which exist in the narrow gaps between atolls also provide some of the Maldives most notable scuba diving experiences. These thilas, formed by a an unusual geological phenomena millions years ago see strong tidal currents drive in the narrow gaps between the atolls, bringing with them the large amounts of food brought in from the open ocean. Subsequently, a good amount of marine life including a variety of sharks and rays can be found here on a regular basis, waiting for the food that comes through with the tidal currents.

Dominica - A Scuba divers paradise.

Located at the Northern end of the Lesser Antilles chain of islands lies the beautiful island of Dominica. A landscape and geography sculpted by the islands volcanic past, have now created a stunning and picturesque landscape both above and below the water. The beautiful, rugged landscape above the water is mirrored by Dominica’s underwater paradise of stunning corals and rich levels of marine, which have thrived due to the extensive conservation efforts in the region.

The scuba diving in Dominica is split into two main regions at the northern and southern tips of the island, both of which hold protected marine reserve status. At the northern tip of Dominica lies the Cabrits Marine Reserve, 1053 acres of coral, sponges and stunning marine life. The diving in Cabrits Marine Reserve is characterised by the wealth of swim throughs, caves and volcanic vents which can be found throughout the area. There are over 20 dive sites to be explored in Cabrits Marine Reserve, including Sharks Mouth, Sunshine Reef and Pole to Pole. However, the most popular dive site in the area is widely acknowledged to be the stunning Toucari Caves, and beautiful reef and cave dive site, and one definitely worth visiting on any diving holiday in Dominica.

The majority of the scuba diving in Dominica takes place on the south of the island, and is focused around the Soufriere Scotts Head Marine Reserve. This large bay, which is centred on the expanse of water around the villages of Anse Bateau, Scotts Head and Soufriere, offers excellent diving and visibility, and has attracted large numbers of scuba divers to Dominica for many years. Inside Soufriere Scotts Head Marine Reserve, the bay offers diving around large pinnacles which raise up from the depths below, surrounded by the rising columns of air bubbles, a legacy of the regions volcanic past.

The climate in Dominica is tropical, and the extreme heat is controlled by the trade winds that breeze through the Caribbean region. As such, there are only slight variations in the temperatures in Dominica, although it is best to avoid the rainy season which is here from late June through to October.

Dominica holds many opportunities for activity and adventure both above and below the water, and many divers have ranked the waters off the coast of Dominica as some of the best scuba diving in the Caribbean.

Bloody Bay Wall In Little Cayman, Cayman Islands.

For fans of wall diving, there can be no better dive site than Bloody Bay Wall in Little Cayman in the Cayman Islands, which offers one of the worlds best wall diving experiences. Depths ranging from as little as 6 metres, ranging down to abyssal depths of around 350 metres ensure that Bloody Bay Wall is one of the worlds best wall diving locations.

Bloody Bay Wall is in fact not one site, but several excellent dive sites along the one major wall, each with its own unique characteristics and marine life. Dive sites such as Marylins Cut and Randy's Gazebo have become popular dive sites over the years with divers looking for the ultimate wall diving experience.

What makes Bloody Bay Wall so unique however is the scale of the walls, and given the extremely good levels of visibility in the reigon (upto 60 metres), immediately the scale is very apparent to those individuals diving on Bloody Bay Wall. Huge expanses of rock are visible in every direction, something seldom found on wall dive locations anywhere else in the world.

Marine life is good on Bloody Bay Wall, and divers are likely to encounter some of the large Nassau Groupers which inhabit the walls, as well the resident populations of Queen Triggerfish and large schools of Jacks.

Protea Banks - Scuba diving in South Africa

The Protea Banks are ranked amongst the best dive sites in South Africa, and offer one of the best opportunities for scuba divers looking to dive with a wide variety of species of shark.

Located only 5 miles off the coast of Margate in Kwazulu Natal, the Protea Banks are in fact a large, exposed reef where depths average around 30-40 metres, and the visibility can range anywhere between 3m up to 20 metres. Protea Banks is an advanced dive site only, and strong currents and large swells are regularly experienced across the reefs.

Without doubt, the major reason that scuba divers visit the Protea Banks is the opportunity to dive with the large shark species. In Protea Banks, there are regular sightings of Zambesi (Bull) Sharks, Tiger, Hammerheads, Ragged Tooth and Bronze Whalers. There are also a few sightings of Great Whites in the waters around the Protea Banks giving credence to its claim as being one of the worlds best shark dive destinations.

Yongala Wreck - Worlds Best Dive Sites

The Yongala Wreck is widely acknowledged as being one of the worlds best dives sites. Located approximately 60 miles south east of Townsville, on the east coast of Australia, the Yongala Wreck is well worth the long trip out to visit the wreck.

The Yongala sank in a cyclone in March 1911, and lay in just undeer 30 metres of water for approximately 60 years before she was discovered. Over time, she has become encrusted with corals, and has become home to a wide variety of marine life including queenfish, turtles and a variety of sea snakes. However, the Yongala Wreck is also notorious for the huge groupers that can often be found lingering underneath the bows at the front of the wreck. During the winter months, it is sometimes also possible to spot migrating humpback whales as they pass through these waters.

The majority of dive operators who dive the Yongala will offer a two dive day, although it should be noted that this is a dive for intermediate divers and above, and strong currents will often be experienced on and around the Yongala wreck.

Scuba Diving In False Bay - South Africa

False Bay is located just over the other side of Table Mountain from Cape Town, and it offers some of the best cool water diving in the Western Cape.

The majority of the diving in False Bay is over the western side of False Bay, towards the shores of the Simons Town and Boulders Beach areas. Predominantly a summer diving destination, False Bay offers a number of excellent dive sites, including the famous wrecks of Smitswinkel Bay where five wrecks were sunk to form an artificial reef in the 1970's.

The Smitswinkel wrecks are in fact the resting places for the former South African navy frigates the Transvaal and the Good Hope, the fishing trawlers the Oratava and the Princess Elizabeth and the Rock Eater. When you are diving on the Smitswinkel Wrecks, it is worth noting that all the wrecks are relatively deep, at around 40 metres, so plan your dives accordingly.

As well as the Smitswinkel Wrecks, there are a number of other good dive sites in the False bay area including Pyramid Rock, Castle Rocks and Partridge Point, all of which are worth a visit if you are scuba diving in False Bay.

Sharm El Sheikh - Scuba Diving In The Red Sea

As one of the most popular scuba diving resorts in the Red Sea, we thought we would take a closer look at Sharm El Sheikh, to see why huge numbers of scuba divers visit here each year.

Sharm El Shiekh is located on the Southern tip of Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, and is today the main destination for those wishing to scuba dive in some of the Red Sea's best dive sites. From Sharm El Sheikh, day boats regularly visit dive sites such as the Thistlegorm Wreck, the Straits of Tiran, the Dunraven Wreck and Ras Mohamed.
Getting to Sharm El Sheikh is relatively easy from most major western airports, and there are numerous airlines offering cheap flights to Sharm El Sheikh from Manchester, Gatwick and other major UK airports. These cheap flights, coupled with the huge increase in hotels and other forms of accomodation in Sharm El Sheikh have resulted competitive prices for those seeking a cheap scuba diving holiday. Scuba Diving In The Red Sea - Elphinstone Reef

Elphinstone Reef is undoubtedly one of the highlights of scuba diving in the Red Sea, and is widely recognised as being one of the best dive sites in the entire Red Sea region. The Elphinstone Reef is usually accessed either via a Red Sea liveaboard, or from one of the numerous day boats which leave from the nearby resort of Marsa Alam.

Located approximately 5 miles off the coast of Egypt at Marsa Abu Dabbab, Elphinstone Reef is in fact one large long reef, with walls which fall away to around 70 metres on either side. The diving on Elphinstone Reef is split into the Northern and Southern Plateau's, with the northern end offering a shallower option, and the southern end of the reef sloping away into the depths. At the northern end of the reef are two large pinnacles, which are deep at around 40-42 metres.

At the far end of Elphinstone Reef is the Sarcophagus Archway where legend dictates that an ancient pharoah lies beneath the arch in their sarcophagus. In fact, this is a large stone in the shape of a sarcophagus, which only more experienced, technical divers are likely to encounter due to it's depth (65m).

There is a good amount of both hard and soft coral covering Elphinstone Reef, as well as a good marine life population. On the reef, you are likely to encounter some large Napoleon Wrasse, as well as the resident Oceanic White Tip Shark and his accompanying Pilot Fish.

Dahab Scuba Diving - The Bells Dive Site

The Bells is one the most well known dive sites in Dahab, and it characterised by the large wall which is the foundation for this beautiful dive site.

The dive site itself is located about 100m north of the Dahab Blue Hole dive site, and following the dramatic entry point (a small slot in the wall), you work your down to around 30 metres before beginning to follow the wall along. The exit point for the dive is the Blue Hole lagoon, which is in around 6m of water.

There is a good amount of coral to be found on the wall, with good amounts of plate and cabbage corals to be found. As with the majority of the dive sites in Dahab, there is a wide variety of reef fish to be found in the area, which overall make for a very pleasant dive, and certainly worth more than one visit if you are diving in Dahab. There are a number of dive operators in Dahab, and all will visit the Bells on a regular basis.

Scuba diving in Moalboal has increased dramatically over the past ten years as the reputation of this secluded part of Cebu in the Philippines has increased amongst scuba divers.

Cedar Pride Dive Site - Scuba Diving In Aqaba

The Cedar Pride is one of only a few wreck dives located in the waters off the coast of Aqaba in Jordan.

The ship itself was originally a Lebanese freighter, which suffered extensive damage during a fire in the Port of Aqaba in 1982. Following a request by King Hussein of Jordan, the ship was sunk in 1985 for the purpose of becoming an artificial reef for scuba diving. The 80 metre long freighter now lies on its port side, in water ranging from 10 metres down to around 28 metres at it's deepest point.

The Cedar Pride is best dived on the seeward side, where divers are able to view the decks of the freighter, although the high point of diving the Cedar Pride is undoubtedly the Crows Nest, which has gradually become encrusted with a range of hard and soft corals over time.

Worlds Best Dive Sites - Protea Banks

Located on the Kwazulu Natal coast in South Africa, the Protea Banks offer some of the best scuba diving in South Africa, and arguably the worlds finest shark diving location. Here, on the large reef located approximately 8 kilometres off the shore at Margate, this impressive reef is home to a wide selection of sharks and other marine life such as Manta Rays, Spotted Eagle Rays and a large number of Moray eels.

The diving at the Protea Banks is split into the Northern and Southern Pinnacles, and tends to follow a seasonal cycle around the movement of the famous ragged tooth sharks or "raggies." During the cooler winter months, the majority of the diving on the Protea Banks tends to on the Northern Pinnacles, where you are likely to encounter huge numbers of these ragged tooth sharks as they visit the Banks as a part of their breeding cycle.

For the rest of the year, the diving on the Protea Banks tends to be located on the Southern Pinnacles, where it is possible to encounter a huge variety of sharks including Bull sharks (Zambesi sharks), Tiger sharks, Mako sharks, Thresher sharks and even the occasional Great White shark passing through.

During the months of June and July, the Protea Banks is also a part of one of natures greatest annual spectacles, the Sardine Run. Every year, huge shoals of millions of Sardines pass through this part of the South African coastline, bringing with them large numbers of sharks, dolphins and even whales who all come to feast on the sardines.

Learning to scuba dive - the purist form of escapism

I have asked on numerous occasions why I decided to try scuba diving, and to be honest, I don’t think it was a conscious decision; I just sort of stumbled upon it. It was just one of those standard parts of the travelling experience, something that you do as you while away the days passing through countries like Thailand, Malaysia and Australia.

What I discovered was unique; it was the genuine escape that you hear people talking about in the office, and my life was changed by those few days scuba diving in Thailand, from that day on, all of my vacations were dictated by where I could scuba dive next.

I had my intial scuba diving lessons ten years ago, and since then I have enjoyed some of my life’s most amazing moments whilst scuba diving. I am certainly not alone, and indeed it is one of my favourite pastimes talking with other scuba divers, sharing experiences, and discussing at what point they realised that they too were hooked.

Today scuba diving is one of the fastest growing sports, and every year increasing numbers are taking courses such as the PADI Open Water diving course, enabling them to experience the awesome wonders beneath the surface.

So for those of you who are looking for something different and unique, why not consider taking some scuba diving courses and learning to dive.

Today, there are an increasing number of dive operators and dive companies offering scuba diving lessons, and given the rapid growth of the sport, this trend is only set to continue.

Worlds Best Dive Sites #5 - Chuuk Lagoon

Chuuk Lagoon, often known as Truk Lagoon, is widely accepted as being one of (if not the) worlds finest wreck dive site. Located in the Federal Republic of Micronesia, Chuuk Lagoon is the home to over 50 shipwrecks, which are scattered over the seabed on this beautiful, peaceful lagoon.

The large number of wreck dive sites at Chuuk Lagoon, are predominantly the result of Operation Hailstone, were the US navy launched a massive attack on the Japanese naval and airbase located at Truk. During the sustained attack, which lasted a total of two days, the US navy sank three Japanese light cruisers, six destroyers, three other warships and 32 merchant ships. As well as the large loss of ships, the Japanese also lost over 250 aircraft in the attack on Chuuk Lagoon, sinking only 25 US aircraft.

The result for scuba divers, is that Chuuk Lagoon now offers one of the largest wreck dive sites in the world, with not only a huge number of individual wrecks, but also the most diverse range to be found anywhere.

Today, scuba divers can visit these wrecks in Chuuk Lagoon, cruising over the decks which have nowadays been overtaken by coral and marine life. Each wreck has its own unique character and personality, ensuring that Chuuk Lagoon has something to offer every scuba diver.

Of all the wrecks in Chuuk Lagoon, the most popular by far is the wreck of the Fujikawa Maru. Initially built as a passenger/cargo carrier, the Fujikawa Maru was taken over by the Japanese navy in December 1940. She was sunk during Operation Hailstone by a single torpedo stike amidships.

Today, the Fujikawa Maru sits upright in the waters of Chuuk Lagoon, in shallow water. Still in relatively good condition, it is still possible to see the Japanese Zero fighters in the hold.

Overall, Chuuk Lagoon lives up to its billing as one of the worlds finest wreck diving sites, and is steadily becoming more popular with the diving masses. For those divers who are really seeking that more unique scuba diving holiday, Chuuk Lagoon certainly delivers for those who are willing to get there. Worlds Best Dive Sites - The Blue Hole In Belize

When scuba diving in Belize, without doubt the main attraction for divers is the opportunity to visit the Blue Hole of Belize. A part of the Lighthouse Reef coral reef, the Blue Hole is located approximately 60 miles off the coast at Belize City, and thought by many to be one of the worlds best dive sites.

Measuring over 350 metres across, and almost 480 feet in depth, the Belize is almost perfectly circual in its circumference. Surrounded by shallow reef and bright blue, crystal clear water, the centre of the hole is a dark blue, giving the hole its famous name. The diving at the Blue Hole is a unique experience, with all aspects of it differing from the usual experiences of diving on coral atolls.

Dives begin from the boats above the shallow sand slopes on the edge of the whole, and it is from here that you begin your rapid descent into the depths below. From the edge of the hole, the sandy slopes are replaced by sheer limestone walls which fall away into the depths below. Once you have reached your maximum depth, the slow ascent begins through the myriad of stalactites which surround the edges of the Blue Hole.

Due to the extreme depths of the Blue Hole, there is not necessarily a large amount of coral growth or marine life to be seen on the dive, however there is the opportunity to see some of the large (Bull, Hammerhead, Lemon and Reef) sharks which inhabit the Blue Hole.

Overall, the Blue Hole in Belize is a truely unique dive, which is well worth of its fame and notoriety. If you are looking to go scuba diving in Belize, then it is worth the long trip out to the Blue Hole

Worlds Best Dive Sites #4 - Scapa Flow In Scotland

Scapa Flow is located approximately 16 miles off the coast of mainland Northern Scotland, and is widely considered to be one of the finest examples of wreck diving sites to be found anywhere in the world. Covering 73 square miles, Scapa Flow is essentially a huge basin, and one of the largest natural harbours in the world. Today, around 20,000 scuba divers visit Scapa Flow each year, and wreck diving is undoubtedly one of the major sources of income for the local economy.

The majority of the wrecks at Scapa Flow have come about from a mass scuttling of the German Fleet in 1919, when the German Commander incorrectly thought that hostilities had been resumed. Rather than see the fleet captured, he order the immediate sinking of the 79 German ships which were in the harbour at time.

Today, wrecks such as The Brummer, a German cruiser, and the Kronpriz Willhelm are well known amongst serious wreck divers. In addition other wrecks in Scapa Flow such as the Konig and the James Barrie also present excellent opportunities for wreck divers.

A wide variety of marine life have made Scapa Flow their home, and with the cold tidal water proving a rich source of nutrients, large populations of animals have developed healthy populations in the region. In particular, Scapa Flow has one of the largest populations of grey seals to be found anywhere in Northern Europe.

A truely legendary dive site, the Thistlegorm wreck has everything that a wreck diver would look for. Lots of life, interesting cargo in and around the wreck itself, and more importantly, a story that surrounds the legendary wreck itself.

On 6th October, 1941, the SS Thistlegorm was carrying a full load of cargo including motorbikes, lorries, uniforms and other supplies when it was spotted by a German plane. Subsequently, two German bombers were dispatched to the area where the Thistlegorm was spotted, they found it, and subsequently sank it. The Thistlegorm wreck now lies in approximately 30 metres of water, in the northern most part of the Red Sea, off the west coast of the Sinai Peninsula.

Today, large numbers of scuba divers visit the Thistlegorm wreck each day, to marvel at the cargo strew around the sea bed near the hull, and then to slowly penetrate the wreck itself, where much of the original cargo still can be found.

Despite the large numbers of scuba divers visiting the wreck of the Thistlegorm, there is a good amount of marine life in and around the wreck, and you are likely to encounter large numbers of jacks, snappers and barracuda around the wreck of the Thistlegorm.

Overall, the Thistlegorm is definately worth a visit and the long trip out to the wreck by boat, the majority of which leave from Sharm El Sheikh early in the morning. Do expect to pay extra for the long distance out to the wreck, however after you've done your two dives, your memories of the Thistlegorm Wreck itself will stay long in your thoughts, not the few extra dollars you paid to get there. Worlds Best Dive Sites #2 - Tiputa Pass In Rangiroa

Lying approximately 200 miles northeast of Tahiti is Rangiroa, an island famed for its stunning beauty over the water, and for large animal encounters below it. Famous for huge currents and tides, this part of the world offers some of the most exciting scuba diving in the world. For those who yearn still for the increased element of adventure, one of the most thrilling elements of Rangiroa is that it is still relatively inexplored. Given the stunning dives that have already been located in the French Polynesia regions, it certainly wets the appetite to think what incredible dive sites may yet still be discovered in the region.

What really attracts scuba divers to the Rangiroa region though, is the opportunity to encounter some seriously big marine life, and in paricular the sharks that frequent the channels where drift diving has become popular. Throughout Rangiroa, common sightings include grey reef sharks, white tips, lemon and black tips, as well as hammerheads in some of the deeper waters.

Of all the dive sites in the region, by far the most famous is the incredible drift dive at Tiputa Pass, which utilises the incoming tide through the narrow pass between the islands. Starting off at Shark Cave in about 30 metres, the dive takes (or fly's!) you through the channel, amongst the marine life before leaving you on the other side in about 18 metres of water. Manta Rays are also a common sighting in the region.

Worlds Best Dive Sites - Baja Alcyone In Cocos

Baja Alcyone was originally made famous by that diving luminary, Jacques Cousteau. Located in the Cocos Islands, Baja Alcyone is a large seamount, which attracts huge amounts of sealife to it. Often subject to very strong currents, Baja Alcyone is not necessarily the dive site for the beginner, however given the large numbers of marine life around the mount, it should be high on the dream dive list for any discerning scuba diver. Marine life regularly sighted around Baja Alcyone include whale sharks, mobula rays, dolphins, scalloped hammerheads and manta rays.

Cocos offers some of the best scuba diving sites available, and due to the difficulty in getting there, you're not going to be surrounded by large amounts of scuba divers. Baja Alcyone is undoubtedly an awesome dive site, however it is paricularly noted for the large numbers, and wide varieties of sharks which frequent the area.

If you are looking for that more unique experience in your scuba diving holidays, Baja Alcyone could well be the option for you.
